A Justification for Redemptive Violence Or a Call to Gospel Nonviolence?

The death of Jesus is central to Christian life and thought, yet it has been frequently been misunderstood and misused.  In many tragic ways, the cross of Christ has been seen as a kind of “redemptive violence,” and has been directly or indirectly used to vindicate and even bless human violence.  By looking at the crucifixion of Jesus in its historical context, we will explore the question:  Why did Jesus die?  How is his death related to his ministry and witness in the Gospels?  How did the early communities grasp his death, and how does it make us think differently about the Resurrection?  We will reflect on how a more radical understanding of the passion of Christ can impact our discipleship, and particularly our efforts to witness to nonviolence in a violent world.

A great experience to begin the journey of Lent.  A light breakfast will be served.  A $10 donation is requested to cover costs (though if you can’t pay, please feel free to come anyway!).

Needs, Prayers, & Shoutouts

Donate: Food, Gift Cards for groceries, or Money for food
We still have about 70 families who come regularly to get food. Sometimes we forget to mention the routine things we do every month -- thanks for helping be the hands of provision for "this day our daily bread" for families here in the neighborhood. Every run we make to the food bank we get about 500 pounds of food. That's a lot of grub, thanks for making it happen.

Donate: Plants, Supplies, and Money
We need your help to complete a green space for our neighbors on the properties which burned down in the fire two years ago. Daffodils cost $1 and trees cost $400 so every bit helps and goes directly toward plotting goodness (literally).

Donate: One Million Dollars
We're looking for one million dollars to buy the porn shops in our neighborhood. Over and over folks are abused and shooting each other outside the bar and adult bookstores. We'd love to give the owners an offer they can't refuse, and a legal agreement not to reopen. Hey, we had a friend that did it... it's worth a shot. We'll turn that porn shop into a red tent revival.
